on CountryLink services as part of an initiative aimed at promoting
rural and regional tourism. Visit
CountryLink's website for more information.
When will the international student travel discount begin?
Tertiary institutions will be able to offer their international
students the new discounted MyMulti passes from enrolment in Semester
1, 2013
What is the benefit to NSW?
The travel discounts will increase NSW’s attractiveness as a
location for further education and provide better access to safe and
affordable public transport for overseas students. Education is one of
the state’s major exports.
What led the government to extend this discount to international students?
The new travel discounts followed a recommendation from the NSW Government’s International Education and Research Taskforce which released its report in late 2012 outlining a number of recommendations for government and industry to help make NSW a global leader in international education by 2021.

On which forms of transport and ticketing will the discount apply?
The discount will apply to 90 day and annual MyMulti2 and MyMulti3 passes. MyMulti passes offer unlimited travel on buses, Sydney Ferries, the Stockton Ferry and light rail services in Greater Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra, as well as unlimited travel on some train services.
See the My Zone page for more information on where you can use MyMulti2 and MyMulti3 tickets.
What ticket is right for
me?
Customers who use public transport frequently and use CityRail trains to travel to or from outer-metropolitan Sydney may wish to purchase a MyMulti3 ticket, which is valid for unlimited travel on buses, Sydney Ferries, the Stockton Ferry and CityRail and light rail services in Greater Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra. A MyMulti3 can be used for your daily travel, as well as trips to Newcastle, Wollongong, the Blue Mountains or the Central Coast, offering great value for money and allowing you to use a single ticket for all your travel on public transport in Sydney.
Customers can also choose a MyMulti2 ticket, which is valid for unlimited travel on buses, Sydney Ferries, the Stockton Ferry and light rail services in Greater Sydney, the Hunter and the Illawarra. MyMulti2 tickets are also valid on many CityRail services, but are not valid on some services further away from the Sydney CBD. See the My Zone page for more information on where you can use MyMulti2 and MyMulti3 tickets.
International students who live in Zone 1 can still make great savings on the discounted MyMulti tickets. For example, a student who would normally use a MyMulti weekly ticket will save more than $118 (or more than 22%) if they buy a discounted MyMulti2 quarterly ticket.
Where can students buy discounted MyMulti tickets?
Tertiary institutions will be able to offer their international students discounted MyMulti tickets from early 2013. International students will be made aware of the tickets’ availability and the procedure for purchasing them when they enrol to study.
How long will my ticket be valid?
Customers purchasing a discounted MyMulti ticket through their educational institution can choose to purchase either a 365 day ticket or a 90 day ticket. For most customers, a 365 day ticket will offer the best convenience and value for money, providing a year of discounted travel on a single ticket.
Some customers may prefer to purchase one or more 90 day tickets, particularly if they do not expect to be in Sydney during the Christmas break or are only attending a short course of one or two semesters.
Is discounted travel limited to getting to and from a student’s place of study?
No, the savings apply to all travel on eligible forms of
transport.
I am an international student. Can I still use other public transport tickets?
Yes, all international students are free to continue to travel on adult MyBus, MyTrain and MyFerry tickets, as well as other MyMulti tickets, such as adult weekly MyMulti tickets.
However, buying the discounted MyMulti2 and MyMulti3 quarterly and
annual tickets will deliver considerable savings over the price of
weekly MyMulti tickets, including the weekly MyMulti1.
I am a domestic student. Can I purchase discounted MyMulti tickets?
The travel discounts will give full fee paying international students – who are not eligible for half fare concessions – access to discounts of up to 35 per cent on the price of full fare MyMulti tickets.
Half fare concessions are already available to eligible domestic students on most MyZone products, including weekly MyMulti tickets, periodical MyTrain tickets and TravelTen tickets for bus and ferry.
Why are CountryLink train services not included in the discount?
International students already have access to a 15 per cent discount on
CountryLink services and if they hold an International Student Identity
Card (ISIC) or an International Identity Card (Student), they are
entitled to a half-price adult fare.
I am a CRICOS registered Education Providor and want to purchase tickets on behalf of our international students. How do I order these tickets?
You can download the order form on the Transport for NSW website. When ordering simply select the commencement date, quantity and delivery details and submit the application for processing.
Please note that the tickets are not “open dated” and they will commence from the nominated start date on the form.
Can education providers keep ordering tickets during the year?
Yes, tickets will continue to be available throughout 2013.
How do I pay for the tickets?
After you have submitted an order form for tickets, an invoice will be sent to you with payment details. The only accepted payment methods are Credit Card and EFT payment.
How long will it take for the tickets to be delivered?
Tickets will be delivered within 2 business days of payment confirmation. When ordering tickets and are paying via EFT, please allow adequate time for the payment to be processed between organisations.
What happens if a student loses a ticket or it becomes damaged?
International student discount tickets are covered under the standard ticketing business rules for refund and replacement services and their associated fees. Please refer to the Passenger fares and coaching handbook (pdf 416KB) for detailed rules.
Replacement tickets: Students need to register their ticket and request a replacement ticket as per the standard replacement procedures.
Refunds: A refund form is available on the Transport for NSW website and should be submitted via the educational institution or nearest train station. The completed form and ticket should be submitted to Ticketing for processing.
Why do you need to collect the Name and Student ID of students who receive International student discount tickets?
This information is used to determine ownership of tickets issued. This is to protect students in cases where their ticket may be lost/stolen or mislaid.
Where can I get further information on this initiative?
You can download the international students travel discount flyer and if you require further information, please email: tickets@railcorp.nsw.gov.au
