Public transport on Google Maps

Document Actions

Public transport customers will now find it easier to plan a trip on buses, ferries, trains and light rail with a new trip planning service available on Google Maps.

By incorporating Transport for NSW data, the new service allows you to search for public transport directions between two locations.

Traditionally a search for directions on Google Maps provided three travel options; walking driving or using a bicycle.  A fourth option is now available which uses Transport for NSW information to offer directions on public transport in greater metropolitan Sydney.

Google Maps is another information tool to help customers navigate the public transport network, and does not replace any existing service.

Services included

Public transport on Google Maps provides journey information for the following services in greater metropolitan Sydney:

  • Buses
  • Ferries
  • CityRail trains
  • Light rail services

How to use public transport directions on Google Maps

  1. Go to Google Maps
  2. Click on "Get Directions" on the upper left.
  3. Click on the public transport icon (looks like a train or bus).
  4. Add your starting point in Box A and your destination in Box B.
  5. Click on "Get Directions" to see three suggested routes and the estimated travel time.
  6. The directions include how to walk to the nearest bus, train, or ferry stop.

Updates and service information

Public transport information will be updated to Google Maps each week. Transport Info 131500 remains the best tool for information about track work and unscheduled interruptions. Transport for NSW is investigating a future upgrade which will allow for service updates on Google Maps.

Journey planning

Google’s algorithms may sometimes generate different trip options when compared with Transport Info 131500. All trip results provided by Google Maps and Transport Info 131500 will be valid.

Public transport information available

Where there are NSW public transport options available, Google will provide three or four public transport trip results. Walking times, travel times and transfer waiting times will appear in all Google trip results.

Public transport on Google Maps available on smart phones

You can search for public transport directions in greater metropolitan Sydney anywhere Google Maps is available on the web. Google Maps is available via Google Maps apps on the iPhone, Android and Blackberry’s operating system for smart phones.

Future versions of public transport for Google Maps for NSW

This is an ongoing project for Transport for NSW and future updates could include information about locations of ticket resellers, commuter car parks, bike racks and lockers.
