STA Revenue Protection OfficerIt is an offence to travel on the public transport in NSW without a valid ticket for the journey you are undertaking or on a concession ticket when you are not in possession of a concession card. It is your responsibility to ensure that the ticket you purchase is the correct ticket for your journey and to carry your concession card at all times when travelling.

Transport staff and police have the right to request to see your ticket and concession card at any time. Tough on-the-spot fines will be issued to people caught evading fares or engaging in anti-social behaviour on trains, buses and ferries on the Transport for NSW network.

State Transit Revenue Protection Officers regularly patrol bus and ferry services and RailCorp Transit Officers regularly patrol trains and stations to ensure you have a safe and trouble-free journey. They have the authority to issue caution notices, on-the-spot fines and to request the cooperation of customers to travel in an orderly manner, without disruption to other customers.

If you are caught travelling without a valid ticket you may be issued with an on-the-spot fine of $100 on buses and ferries and $200 on trains. If you are fined you will be given an Infringement Notice with payment required within 21 days. Payment can be made to the State Debt Recovery Office by mail, online or by phoning 1300 138 118.

Customers who wish to appeal an Infringement Notice may elect to have the matter heard before a Magistrate. Instructions on how to appeal appear on the notice. Be aware that the Magistrate has the authority to increase the fine amount, up to a maximum of $550 for fare evasion, if your appeal is unsuccessful. See the tables below for examples of on-the-spot fines and maximum penalties for a range of offences.
