A range of free travel and concession fares on NSW transport services is available to:
- Ex-members of the Defence Forces with service related disabilities
- Ex-members of the defence forces with vision impairment
- WW1 veterans (and widows); recipients of the Victoria Cross and the George Cross
- War widows and widowers
Ex-members of the Defence Forces Pass
You
are entitled to free travel on trains, buses and most ferries in the
Sydney metropolitan and outer metropolitan areas, including Newcastle,
the Lower Hunter, the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, Lithgow and
the Illawarra, including the Airport Line station access fee if:
- you are a war veteran with disabilities, from Australia, New
Zealand or from a WWII Allied Nation with reciprocal pension rights
with Australia, and have been rated by the Department of Veterans
Affairs as having a service-related disability of 10% or greater for
which you receive a disability pension from the Department of Veterans
Affairs (DVA), or
- you are in receipt of periodic payments or have received a lump sum
payment from DVA for permanent impairment compensation and your overall
impairment points determined under the Military Rehabilitation and
Compensation Act, 2004 (C'wlth) for injuries or diseases related
to overseas warlike or non-warlike service [1] are at least 10 points.
Free travel is not available on Manly Fast Ferry, Sydney Fast Ferries, premium, charter, tourism or special event services (except Moore Park Special Event Bus services). Privately owned and operated services, including the light rail, monorail and regional services, may offer concessions at their own discretion. Check with the operator before travelling.
To obtain an Ex-Members of Defence Forces Pass complete the application form and include a copy of your disability determination from the DVA. Download the application form (pdf 88KB) or obtain one from the Transport Passes and Concessions Office.
The Pass is issued free of charge and is valid for 1 year (Ex-Defence) or 3 years (Blinded Soldier). You must carry the pass with you at all times when travelling and show it to transport staff on request.
Free travel is also available for an attendant travelling with a card holder if the pass is marked 'Plus Attendant' or with a Companion Card. Assistance animals are permitted to travel with a pass holder if an Assistance Travel Permit is held.
Pass holders may also be entitled to subsidised taxi travel under the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme.NSW country train travel
If you live outside the Sydney and Newcastle CityRail suburban areas you are also entitled to limited free travel on CountryLink trains. Each year you can take 3 free return (or 6 single) trips on the CountryLink network in NSW or the NSW portion of an interstate trip. To obtain this concession you need to present your pass at any CountryLink ticket office or accredited travel agency.
NSW Blinded Soldier Gold Pass
If you reside permanently in NSW and
are a war veteran classified by the DVA as blinded due to war service,
you are entitled to free travel on trains, buses and most ferries in
the Sydney metropolitan and outer metropolitan areas, including
Newcastle, the Lower Hunter, the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains,
Lithgow and the Illawarra, including the Airport Line station access
fee.
Free travel is not available on Manly Fast Ferry, Sydney Fast Ferries, premium, charter, tourism or special event services (except Moore Park Special Event Bus services).

World War 1 Veteran's, Widows Free Pass
If you reside in NSW and are a World

widow or widower of someone who was - you are entitled to free travel

metropolitan areas, including Newcastle, the Lower Hunter, the Central

NSW War Widow/ers Concession Card
If you are an Australian
citizen or permanent resident residing permanently in NSW, and the
widow, widower or partner of:
- a member of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who died on active service and are in receipt of a War Widows Pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs, or
- a deceased ADF member and who has been compensated under subsection 234(1) of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (Cwlth) and the member’s death was related to overseas warlike or non-warlike service. [1]
you are entitled to a half-fare concession on MyMulti day and weekly tickets, MyTrain tickets (excluding off-peak return), MyBus tickets, special event shuttle buses, Newcastle Buses & Ferries tickets, MyFerry tickets, Airport Line station access fee, daily excursion tickets and limited free travel on CountryLink or Great Southern Rail services.
NSW war widow/ers entitlements are the same as the Pensioner Concession Card.
Concessions are not available on longer term MyMulti tickets (monthly, quarterly and yearly), MyTrain off-peak return tickets, Manly Fast Ferry and Sydney Fast Ferries, monorail or chartered bus services. Privately owned and operated services may offer concessions at their own discretion. Check with the operator before travelling.
To obtain the concession fares you will need to obtain a NSW War Widow/ers Concession Card, which you must carry with you at all times when travelling and show to transport staff on request.
Cards are issued free of charge by the Department of Veterans Affairs and are valid for 12 months up to 31 December each year.
[1] Warlike and non-warlike service is as defined in the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation (Warlike Service) Determination 2012 (No.1 ) and the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation (Non-warlike Service) Determination 2012 (No. 2) made under 6(1)(a) of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act, 2004 (Cwlth) and any subsequent Determinations made under that part.
